Go back with me in time, to many years ago. Imagine being there when time stood still. What would you have done or thought? Would you have said anything as everything was taking place? Go with me…
Things are very dark and grim on this Friday morning, as some changes are beginning to unfold. There is JESUS! What are they doing to HIM? He is carrying this heavy wooden cross up the hill of Calvary. Look at them, they are pushing HIM. Now they are hitting HIM! I honestly can’t understand what is happening as the closest person to GOD is being destroyed right before my eyes. I can’t help but shout, “GOD, where are YOU?” as JESUS is being beaten and spit on, and while so many others are just laughing at HIM. What can I do? Can I stop them? If I jump in, will I be killed, too? “GOD, where are YOU?”. “GOD, why are YOU not stopping them?” I can’t believe this is happening! Look at HIM, there HE is needing a drink. I have some cold water here, should I take it to HIM? Oh good, they just gave HIM something to drink. WHAT? VINEGAR? Why would anyone do that? I should take HIM this water, but… NO! NO! It can’t be! It can’t be over! “IT IS FINISHED” are the words that JESUS barely was able to speak, and well, now it is over. I can’t handle what is happening. JESUS just dropped HIS head and is hanging there with his entire body limp. I am shouting, “JESUS! JESUS! JESUS!” but there is no response. WHAT? Why did HE have to die? Why did they have to take HIS life? How can it be that the very one that has changed so many lives, gave so much hope, and saved countless ones from destruction is now dead? Surly this can’t be happening?
Now, as we are back in todays time, would you have tried to stop them from beating and spitting on HIM? Would you have risked your life to take HIM water as soon you seen that HE was thirsty?
Matthew 25: 35-46 (KJV)
For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
“Good Friday” didn’t seem to be that good of a day then, however it turned out to be a wonderful LIFE/DEATH changing event. JESUS had to go through Friday in order for Sunday to come! I hope you know what happened on that Sunday! Maybe you are somewhat living your “Good Friday” today, and everything around you is falling apart. Please take the time to remember that HE knows exactly how you feel and is there to bring you through to a brand new dawning. Just let HIM carry your burdens up the hill to the FATHER!
